I would like to speak to you today about my personal mission in life.
My journey began early in life as I was raised by a single mom who instilled values that are at my core to this day.
My Mom was a nurse and from the time I was a little girl, I always remember people coming to her for help. She was my role model in teaching me to be independent but caring and compassionate toward others. But there was a time when she needed help, as did my sister, my brother and myself. Mom had been through a prolonged and very stressful divorce which took its toll on all of us. Somehow, we connected with the Baptist Church in Eden where we lived at the time. It was a caring, welcoming and safe place to be as is this church. I remember those years as being happy and tranquil ones. So, from my early childhood, membership and participation in a church was really important to me.
All this influenced my decision to choose Nursing as my profession – reaching out and helping people. It was also at the core of my involvement with my nurses union. The union leaders seemed to think the way I did. Helping people, empowering people to better their work lives and their family lives.
And that’s why I got involved in our church’s Outreach Committee. Our purpose is to provide needed services, like preparing meals for Friends of Night People, serving lunch at AIDS Alliance and sponsoring a Refugee family to get resettled.
But it is more than that. Our services are more important than their face value. Every service we perform can have a positive influence on society. People notice what you do. It can really make a big impression on a young person or anyone. And that’s how life can be better. It all matters. So if we are to talk about mission in life, this is mine. This committee and my Nursing – all help me express my mission in life.
