Social Justice Committee
Table Talk Gathering on August 24th, 2008

The Nativity Social Justice
Issues and Avenues Discussed by 30 Individuals

Issues

Avenues

Healthcare

Need better quality and it be accessible by all. We must think of the end that we desire so that everyone is covered. (For example, proper prenatal care affects a person’s entire lifespan. So children, teens, all ages, employed and unemployed people need coverage.) What are the necessary steps to bring it about? We need to bring politicians, religious leaders, business leaders together with the goal of getting them to make decisions based on what is good for all ~ not just a few with their separate agendas.

Education

Talking with your children. Turn off your TV. Do you know the real needs of your child’s classroom and teacher? Donate books to inner city kids. Connect suburban schools to city schools and practically reinforce our connection to all people. Get good teachers in the system. Eliminate residency requirement. “Character, Not Color”

Jobs

Can you refer someone looking for a job to the best place of resources for those seeking occupational change? [Buffalo Employment and Training Center “BETC”] Trying to reinforce what is good for all. Support local farmers, try to make businesses sustainable, better promotion and development of local businesses. Helping people gear themselves to purchase products that are available in our area. Two search engines in Buffalo: findit quick.com; seevast.com. See also Craig’s List for local jobs.

Consumerism-commercialism

Don’t buy everything to try to keep up with your peers. Happiness is not obtained by things. Share, use things wisely in home. Simplify.

Environment

Recycle. Share. Participate in re-using discarded items (just do it).

Community

How many words have you spoken to your neighbor?
Form block clubs, know your neighbors; your store owners. Shop locally. Keep neighborhood clean (reduces crime). Keep parks in the city as clean as the parks in the burbs. Churches should get more involved in the communities around them.

Changes in the city

Elimination of poverty

Elimination of violence

Government’s vision of our city

We need better promotion of our city’s job opportunities. We should use local developers.

Eliminate Racism

Confront stereotypes, build community awareness. Obama’s election should raise expectations of African Americans and all of us.

Wise Regional Planning

Use existing resources wisely: ie: waterways
Think regionally rather than be stuck in area competitive practices that ignore existing infrastructure in the city. Think of the end product desired. The result will be our pride in our region because it has become progressive and wise.
