On October 28th, 2007 we welcomed Dr. Barbara Harbach as our guest composer and organist. Dr. Harbach played"Finale on 'Ein' Feste Burg,' A Mighty Fortress Is Our God in celebration of our church's 60th anniversary. As a composer, Barbara Harbach has a large catalog of works, including symphonies, works for chamber ensemble, string orchestra, organ, harpsichord, musicals, choral anthems, film scores, modern ballets, and many arrangements for brass and organ of various Baroque works. She is also involved in the research, editing and publication of manuscripts of eighteenth-century keyboard composers as well as historical and contemporary women composers. Her works are available in both recorded and published form through labels including MSR Classics, Naxos, Gasparo Records, Kingdom Records, Albany Records and Northeastern Records, and publishers including Hester Park, Robert King, Elkan-Vogel, Augsburg Publishing, Agape Music and Vivace Press.
Her two most recently released CDs, Vol. 1, Barbara Harbach: Orchestral Music: Symphony, Reverie and Rhapsody, and Vol. 2, Barbara Harbach: Chamber Music I, Ensemble, String Quartet and Woodwind Quartet, are the first two in a series of seven CDs recorded on MSR Classics. Both CDs have been nominated for Grammy Awards! The remaining five CDs to be released will be recordings of Dr. Harbach's organ music (Vol. 3), vocal and choral music (Vol. 5), concertos (Vol. 7) and two more chamber music CDs (Vols. 4 and 6).
Her website is at http://www.barbaraharbach.com/. Read her latest Transformations newsletter online at http://www.jamesarts.com/releases/july07/BH_nws_070037.htm.
As a performer, her lively concerts and recordings have captured the imagination of many American composers, and the body of work written for and dedicated to Harbach is substantial. Musical America has called her "nothing short of brilliant," and Gramophone has cited her as an "acknowledged interpreter -- and, indeed, muse -- of modern harpsichord music. Dr. Harbach is currently on faculty at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. We are thrilled to have Dr. Harbach with us today conducting the world premiere of her chorale concertato "God Bless Your Church with Strength," commissioned for the Church of the Nativity's 60th anniversary!
