CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY-VOICE CORE TEAM MEETING MINUTES
JANUARY 14, 2008
Present: Bette Brunish, Jan Losi, Nancy Kresge(chair), Carol Horvath, Linda Siddons, Philip Siddons, Mary Ann Sheldon, Luke Reigstad, Mary Ann Reigstad, Helen Cyrulik.
Meeting called to order at 7:08pm. Jan Losi read a quote from Ann Frank sent to him by his sister-in-law.
- Old minutes reviewed and accepted. Handout written by Philip Siddons on “Responses to the 1/12/08 VOICE-Buffalo Board of Directors’ Strategic Planning Session.
- Name change ideas: committee selected “Social and Justice Committee”.
- Training Report of 1/12-Leadership Strategy session; organizing people and money; action oriented—see attatched “Summary of the Gamaliel Training…”.
- General Meeting is 2/11 at 7:00pm at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1035 Delaware Avenue. NOTE: our next meeting at Nativity will be Monday, February 18, 2008 at 7:00pm due to the general meeting being scheduled on our usual meeting date.
- Thruway Alliance will be gathering in Rochester February 12-13 to launch its statewide campaign on Health Care, Local Hiring/Benefit Agreements and Youth Jobs & Violence Prevention.
- One-on One Conversations: Oral report given by Nancy. Everyone is encouraged to continue conversations.
- International Feast of Tables: on Saturaday, February 16 in the Catholic Academy of West Buffalo from 5:30pm-8:00pm. Nativity will be serving Hungarian cuisine-coordinated by Carol Horvath. Theme will be red/white/green decorations. We will prepare and serve Hungarian Goulash, Cucumber Salad, and a traditioinal Hungarian Dessert. Volunteers will meet at the church on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 5:00pm to cook and prepare the food. This fundraiser for VOICE Buffalo goal is to raise $6000; including a ticket auction.
- How can we educate congregation on Justice issues?: suggestions include:
lectures on issues, moment of concern, article in Parish News, check with clergy regarding topic on social justice-panel discussion as part of sermon or a dialogue sermon;Amnesty Internaltional-1st chapter started; Students against sweat shops at UB; Sprawl DVD; start a story: once a month for 5 months do a story about injustice; Encourage voter registration, offer a ride to vote.
- Evaluation & Prayer: closing prayer: Carol Horvath. Very productive meeting.
